Over the years, Haras de La Mellerie has grown around a simple yet demanding vision: to raise and live with versatile, balanced horses, close to people, while respecting their needs and their nature.
The founding inspiration lies with the Haflinger, a generous and enduring horse, equally at ease under saddle or in harness, an ideal companion for leisure riding and long-distance trails. To this solid foundation is added the elegance of Iberian horses, appreciated for their brilliance, sensitivity and almost majestic presence.
From this meeting of rustic strength, refinement and passion was born a small-scale, human-sized breeding, where each horse is considered as an individual in its own right. Here, the experience goes beyond riding: it is an invitation to understand, to feel and to share a sincere relationship, built on trust and harmony.
In the North Médoc, a land traditionally associated with sport horses and performance, the Haflinger was not an obvious choice. And yet.
From the very beginnings of Haras de La Mellerie, a clear direction emerged: that of a leisure horse - versatile, mentally and physically sound, capable of accompanying people over the long term, far from competition arenas and passing trends.
Rustic without being rough, willing without being rushed, the Haflinger has proven to be an ideal companion for an approach to horsemanship centred on pleasure, driving, long-distance riding and, above all, relationship. Here, there is no search for recognition or trophies - only the deep passion of a man for a reliable horse, close to people and respected for what it is.
Over the generations, this mindset has endured. Some horses are fully registered, others are not - but all are raised with the same care, the same coherence and the same ethical commitment.
What matters is not fashion or performance, but the quality of the relationship and the horse’s well-being.
Today, as the equestrian world evolves and finally places the horse back at the centre of its concerns, this once isolated choice finds a clear and natural resonance.
The Haflinger of Haras de La Mellerie embodies a form of horsemanship that is sincere, sustainable and respectful, where the horse is not a tool, but a true partner in life…
Above all, Pascal is a rider of the open countryside, guided by a deep respect for the horse and the bond that grows between horse and rider.
His ideal has never been performance or competition, but a medium-sized, versatile and reliable horse, easy to live with, hardy and well-balanced — a horse able to accompany people over time, both under saddle and in a carriage.
With this vision in mind, he has, over the years, developed carefully considered crossings between Haflingers and Iberian horses, particularly the Lusitano.
The aim was never to create a new “breed”, but to raise well-rounded leisure horses, perfectly suited to relaxed, family-friendly riding, outdoor activities and a respectful way of being with horses.
These crossings have produced horses known for their gentle nature, affectionate temperament and closeness to people, combined with the sensitivity and willingness to learn typical of Iberian horses.
Balanced and generous, they are a pleasure to work with and naturally suited to both riding and carriage driving.
Some horses remain at the haras, while others go on to join carefully selected new homes.
All are raised with the same attention and care, because here, every horse is valued first and foremost as a trusted companion.
